In the past, the edge protection industry has been self regulated and has not been forced to comply with any Australian Standards. On 30th April 2004 the AS/NZS 4994.1 and 4994.2 (int) were published but not enforceable, however as of 30th April 2006 the AS/NZS 4994.1 and 4994.2 are now enforceable Australian Standards. This means that compliance with these 2 Standards forces the edge protection supplier to rigorously test their systems under the supervision of an independent engineer and remain within the requirements. Installation of the system must also be in compliance with the requirements of the Standard.
